Coffee Luwak Protects Asian Palm Civet.
Coffee Luwak is unique product of coffee, that in some eco friendly view, should be recommended for coffee lovers who love animals. There are many species can be protected by growing organic coffee as it avoids using pesticides and implement the shade-grown coffee. Birds, bats, butterflies, bees and many more insects are among those that are protected in organic coffee plantation. What you perhaps didn’t know is another kind of coffee that protects Asian Palm Civet (Paradoxurus hermaphrodites) from being threatened. It is Coffee Luwak.
For centuries, starting even before the very first coffee plantation on Earth, Civet has been one of the enemies of coffee growers. Being an omnivore, civet eat fruits and also insects, but their main food are berries and pulpy fruits. They naturally inhabit forests, but also found in logged forest, suburban, plantation and cities. Deforestation might have contributed impact on their habitation. When millions hectares of forest in Southeast Asia were turned to palm plantations, Luwak, as well Orangutan and many more species, were suddenly treated as “pests” in the area that were formerly their homes.
History of Coffee Luwak :
Coffee Luwak is originally produced in Indonesia. In local language, Luwak means Civet or fox. Civets eat ripen coffee berries, hence their population in coffee plantations is remarkably high. In the early 18th century, the Dutch, who colonized Indonesia, established coffee plantations in the islands of Java and Sumatera. The Dutch, implemented their cultivation systems, prohibited the native farmers and plantation workers from harvesting the coffee fruits for their own use. Still, the native farmers wish to have a taste of the coffee they planted. They learnt that species of Luwak that were found in the coffee plantation consumed the coffee berries but left the undigested coffee beans on their droppings. Some native farmers collected these luwaks’ coffee seed droppings, washed, roasted and ground those coffee beans to make their own coffee drink… and this is the beginning of the famous coffee Luwak creation. The legendary of aromatic civet coffee spread from locals to Dutch plantation owners.. and slowly leaks to the whole world, popular both by its original name Kopi Luwak ( Coffee Luwak) or its English name Civet Cat Coffee.
Fermentation of coffee Luwak.
Having extraordinary unique aroma and taste has made Kopi Luwak the rarest gourmet coffee in the world, and the most expensive too. The coffee beans, that have been fermented with acids and enzymes produced by the civet’s digestion, produce a perfect coffee brew, smooth, chocolaty flavor with less bitterness and low acidity, in exotic aroma.
There have been some efforts made to produce synthetic enzyme to soak coffee bean to make synthetic kopi Luwak, and there you can find cheaper “Kopi Luwak” products in the market.
How Coffee Luwak saves Civet.
Today the fame coffee luwak’s aroma has indulged thousands of coffee lovers worldwide. The high demand of coffee Luwak has brought prosperity not only for the coffee growers and the coffee traders, but also for the Luwak. Civet or Luwak are no longer hunted or killed as coffee predators, but on the contrary, are bred. Many coffee growers raised organic Luwak breeding in their coffee plantation for the higher prices that coffee Luwak make. In most regular coffee plantation, Luwak is treated as pests, but in production of Kopi Luwak, this animal is treated as “co-workers”.
This coffee growing systems does not take place only in Indonesia, but have spread to some Southeast Asia countries like Philippine, Malaysia, and Vietnam.
