FACTS AND TIPS ABOUT HOW TO SAVE WATER IN THE KITCHEN

Just like bathroom, kitchen is a room where water plays main role.  Preparing meals and washing the dishes are the main activities in the kitchen, and they both need water. So although kitchen does not account for the biggest consumption of household water, we can do significant  water saving from there.  Here are some tips to save water in the kitchen.

Facts :

  • Average household needs about 5 gallons of water per day to prepare meal.
  • An automatic dishwasher uses about 50% less water than does the hand washing.
  • A leaky faucet can waste 100 gallons a day.

Tips :

  • Cleanly scrape off the residual food before washing the dishes. If you use dishwasher then you don’t need to do pre-washing, and if you wash the dishes by hand, this can save you from a long running faucet. Both can save you up to10 gallons of water on each dish washing.
  • Clean vegetables or fruits in a pan of water, not under a running faucet. You can reuse the water for cleaning purpose or watering your plant.
  • Store a jar of drinking water in the refrigerator, so you don’t have to run the tap every time you need cold water.
  • Defrost food overnight in refrigerator instead of using running water, a running faucet uses about two gallon of water per minute.
  • If you are boiling water for coffee or tea, fill the pot with only as much water as you need, if there is still leftover, cool the water in a basin to water your plants. You also can do this with the used water from steaming or boiling in cooking.
  • Water usage : An automatic dishwasher uses 9 to 12 gallons of water, while hand washing dishes can use up to 20 gallons, but saving water in the kitchen could only be efficient if your dishwasher is run with full load.

Except practicing above tips to save water in the kitchen, you will also need water efficient faucets and dishwasher to start your fighting water crisis from your home.
