Efficient Lawn Watering:

  • Avoid watering your garden / lawn between 6 a.m to 6 p.m. as you might waste the water through evaporation due to sunlight. Evaporation or over-watering could waste 50% of the water.
  • Water deeply to encourage deep root growth. . It’s efficient to water less frequent but longer. Doing this will encourage deep root growth. Deep roots can access moisture in the soil better than shallow ones, making the grass become drought resistant. On the opposite, frequent shallow watering is not effective - causing the grass plants’ roots to grow shallow, leaving the plant more vulnerable to drought and to certain diseases.
  • Aerating your lawn once a year can improve the soil’s absorption rate and reduce runoff problems.

Efficient Irrigation Devices:

  • Use soaker hose as it helps efficient deep watering which encourages roots to grow deeper.
  • Install irrigation devices that are the most water efficient for each use such as micro and drip irrigation.
  • Use spade or trowel to check the moisture of the root zone in your lawn. You need not water your lawn if two inches under the soil surface is still moist. This simple tool does not only keep you from wasting water, but also save your time.
  • Set rain barrels to collect rain water to water your lawn. Rain water is so plenty and is free. Ideal for lawn watering which needs quite lot of water.
  • Use mulch to retain moisture in the soil.
