ECO CLEANERS.

Eco Cleaners VS Standard Cleaners.

Eco cleaners have been increasingly used nowadays along with the raising awareness of the risks of various toxic chemicals used in the standard cleaners. Here is the story why the market of eco cleaners or usually known as green cleaners or natural cleaners is reported to be growing by 18-25% each year despite the fact that they cost a bit higher then their older cousin, the conventional cleaners.

Most of us have been brainwashed with the perception that clean is healthy; and it is just true. We clean our house, our teeth, our furniture, our clothes, our cars and everything we own, not just to make them clean, shiny and priding, but also to maintain our health.  We are willing to spend lots of money to buy cleaners to do so, unaware that the cleaners themselves threaten our health!

Average American uses 40 pounds of toxic cleaning products, throwing away 12 percent of their leftovers in landfills and pouring a total of 32 million pounds down the drain.

Whether we use eco cleaners or just standard  cleaners, we do lots of cleaning everyday. Learn about cleaners that are unavoidably  used in our daily life, their general chemical compounds found in conventional cleaners and their  risks :

  • Laundry detergent : contain bleach Sodium hypochlorite (bleach) - A corrosive chemical, sodium hypochlorite is an eye, skin and respiratory irritant, as well as a sensitizer.  It is especially hazardous to people with heart conditions or asthma, and can be fatal if swallowed.  It may be a neurotoxin and toxic to the liver. moreover, other  chemical compounds such as  Ethoxylated nonyl phenol -  Nonyl phenols that are hormone disruptors and some contain traces of ethylene oxide, a known human carcinogen.  They are eye and skin irritants.
  • Liquid dishwasher detergent : Mostly contain Phosphoric acid, which is  extremely corrosive.  It can irritate and burn our skin and eyes, can be neurotoxin, depress the central nervous system.  Inhaling  vapors can make the lungs ache.
  • Bathroom cleaners :  similar to laundry detergent, they are generally containing sodium hypochlorite.  Another chemical compound usually used is formaldehyde, which carries carcinogen, which  causes cancer and damages DNA.
  • Drain cleaners  may contain trichloroethane, an eye and skin irritant and nervous system depressant that damage our kidneys and liver. The worse is, it also contain Phosphoric acid - Extremely corrosive, it can severely irritate and burn the skin and eyes.  Breathing vapors can make the lungs ache, and it may be toxic to the central nervous system. .
  • Wood Polish : commonly contain petroleum distillates, that may cause skin and lung cancer; exposure to our lungs may cause fatal pulmonary edema. Another chemical used for this product is Turpentine.  This chemical can cause allergic sensitization, can harm our kidneys, bladder and central nervous system and irritate our eyes.
  • Car Wax :  also contain petroleum distillates, with similar risks.
  • Furniture polish : Morpholine -  Not just severely irritate eyes, this corrosive ingredient can even cause blindness if splashed in eyes.  It  also can cause liver and kidney damage, and extensive exposure can lead to bronchitis.
  • Spot remover and floor polishes : Mostly contain Xylene - Xylene, which except damage liver, developing fetus and liver, can also trigger   significant neurotoxic effects such as loss of memory and even consciousness.   It may also damage liver, kidneys and the developing fetus. This chemical is also  eye and moderate skin irritant.
  • Carpet cleaners may contain perchlorethylene, a known carcinogen, and ammonium hydroxide, a corrosive that are irritant  to our eyes, skin and respiratory passages.
  • Shoe Polishes often contain neurotoxic petroleum products that can enter our body  through skin exposure or inhalation. One of the neurotoxins is  turpentine, which also cause allergic sensitization and serious kidneys irritation. Other chemical compounds usually used in shoe polishes are stoddard solvent, and heptane. These products may also include carcinogenic dyes, butyl acetate and dipropylen glycol methyl ether, the latest two are eye and skin irritants.
  • Stain remover : Methylene chloride - Methylene chloride is a carcinogen, a neurotoxin and a reproductive toxin. On inhalation, it can cause liver and brain damage, irregular heartbeat, and even heart attack. It is a severe skin and moderate eye irritant. Used in stain removers.

In 2000, the U.S. Poison Control Centers reported that cleaning products were responsible for nearly for nearly 10 percent of all toxic exposures, accounting for 206,636 calls. This is one reason that made  the industry of eco cleaners have vastly grown.

The risks of home cleaner’s pollutants to the environment :

Most household cleaners contain toxic and environmental damaging chemical. We pour them to our drainage,  spray them to the air and  coat them to many layers.   Then  finally, we  improperly place and dispose the “empty” containers to the landfill. This has caused some environmental damages like :

Water Pollution : A study done by the U.S. Geological Survey revealed that  69% of streams sampled contained persistent detergent metabolites, and 66 percent contained disinfectants. This pollution is considered to have seriously threatening the world’s quantity and quality of fresh water and worsened the water crisis we are facing.

Air Pollution :

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA) reported that the air inside the typical home is on average 2-5 times more polluted than the air  outside-and in extreme cases, 100 times more contaminated, mostly due to the household cleaners and pesticides use.

Considering that Americans spend 90% of their time indoors, it is worth to do our utmost to minimize the sources of our indoor pollution.

What you can do :

Use natural ingredients to do the cleaning where possible. Some ingredients, like baking soda, vinegar, lemon  and salt  have elements that  cleanse, polish and even remove dirt or stains. A mixture of  some natural ingredients would make a good  natural cleaning substance.

You can  either use eco cleaning or green cleaning products, which are produced with eco-friendly ingredients and chemicals to protect both the human health and the environment. Eco cleaning production prevents the use of chemically reactive and toxic compounds. Usually the products are using organic cleaner substances which are not  just safe but also biodegradable.
