Hemp Clothes

Hemp Clothes, eco friendly clothes.

Clothing does generate some significant effects to the environment,  but unfortunately most of us refers to “fashion” only when talking about clothing. Hemp clothes, the most eco friendly clothes which were mostly used before the industrial revolution, are now left behind, beat by  with cotton clothes.

Compared to cotton, organic hemp clothing is far more sustainable. Here are some facts on cotton and hemp farming :

 1.      Hemp is a hardy plant that  barely needs pesticides or fertilizer to grow,  while cotton uses 25% of the US’ pesticides, or 50% of the world’s pesticides and it can take almost a 1/3 pound of synthetic fertilizers to grow one pound of raw cotton in the US. Nitrogen synthetic fertilizers commonly used in cotton farming are considered the most damaging  to the environment :

  • To the water : polluting and causing runoff of freshwater.
  • To the atmosphere : contributes N2O emissions, which are 300 times more potent than CO2 as greenhouse gas.

Seven of the top 15 pesticides used on cotton in 2000 in the United States as “possible,” “likely,” “probable,” or “known” human carcinogens (acephate, dichloropropene, diuron, fluometuron, pendimethalin, tribufos, and trifluralin).

2.      Organic cotton uses compost and animal manure as fertilizer, but cattle manure releases  Methane, another greenhouse gas.Once methane is released from earth  it can stay at the atmosphere for 9 to 15 years and   is  23 times powerful in trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide (CO2) over a 100-year period, plus 65 percent nitrous oxide  which heat effect is 296 times than CO2.

3.      One pound of cotton require 100 gallons of water while hemp can survive on  rainfall in most climates.

4.      Hemp will produce 1500 pounds of fiber per acre, whereas cotton will produce only 500 pounds per acre! This means hemp farming are more efficient in the land use.

Considering all the above facts, it seems that  hemp clothes has silently  brought  some magnificent gifts for  us :

  1. * A cleaner planet
  2. * Better freshwater conservation, both in quantity and quality. .
  3. * Forest, due to its effective use of land that avoiding wider land clearing.
  4. * Chance to prevent the survival of more plant and animal species.

Add these luxurious environmental gifts to the fact that :

  • Hemp fabric is softer and warmer.
  • Hemp clothes are more water resistant.
  • Hemp clothes can block the sun’s UV rays more effectively than any other kinds of clothes.
  • Hemp fabric also uses less chemicals to produce.
  • Hemp clothes are more durable, because hemp fiber are stronger than of other fiber made for clothes. This supports the eco living way of ” reduce and reuse”.
  • This eco friendly hemp clothes is more biodegradable.

Changing to hemp clothes will certainly give a chance to heal our planet, but keep in mind that no matter what your kind of clothes you own, they will generate some environmental impacts for their maintenance. Eighty percent of the energy consume by our clothes is used on washing them. In U.S., approximately 4.5 billion gallon of fresh water are spent in washing machines each day.  Learn how to minimize your clothes footprint .
