Computer is the most important appliance in office. Computer helps us doing most of our jobs in office.  Running an office without computer is like running a restaurant without stove  :) .  Since integrated with internet, the utilities of a computer become even greater, that we cannot either imagine a home without computer today. And that made the manufacturing of computers booming.

That’s incredible number.  And it keeps incredibly increasing too due to the rapid technology development, lower prices, and planned obsolescence policy made by the manufacturers. The cost to the environment? Certainly become larger and larger.

Environmental Impacts Generated from Computers.

Assuming your computer takes as little as 60 Watt, you will toss 1 kg. of CO2 to the atmosphere by using it for 32 hours. Imagine how much it will harm the environment from the global use of hundreds of million computers.

But that’s just not the biggest impact tossed by our computers. The process before they get to our desks is. Computer manufacturing takes 70% of the energy consumed during its life span and it does use various of other natural sources, such as huge amount of water. The sales of the computers will as well generate harsh environmental impacts, such as pollution and emission generated from the packaging, and CO2 from the distribution. When being obsolete, it can create hazardous electronic waste if not properly managed.

The goals of Eco friendly computing from the side of the computer users should be made in perspective of minimizing the energy consumption and e-waste.

Here are some tips and guides to make eco friendly computer from which you can help cutting the down the adverse impacts :

  • Choose low energy computers : Energy Star label.  Computers labeled under Energy Star can save significant energy. If all computers sold in the U.S. met ENERGY STAR requirements, the savings in energy costs would grow to $1.8 billion each year, reducing greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from more than 2 million vehicles. Consider laptop when buying a new computer, as it uses only ¼ energy of the desktop type.

  • Activate the power management features. Set a sleeping mode that will automatically drive to lower electricity consumption when the computer is not in used. A computer continuously operated will emit 2,161 pounds of CO2 in a year.
  • Turning off your computer when you leave the office. A computer set to run only 8 hours a day will cut 810 kWh electricity per year.
  • Donate or recycle your obsolete computer. Once you decide to have a new computer, do not just throw away your old / absolute computer. Consider the toxic waste that will pollute our Earth. Computer components contain many toxic substances, like dioxins, polychlorinated phenylalanine (PCBs), cadmium, chromium, lead, radioactive isotopes, and mercury.  The US Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA)  estimates that 29.9 million desktops and 12 million laptops were discarded in 2007, or 112,000 computers discarded per day! Find a way that your old computer can be reused or recycled.
